Teachers and sports co-ordinators have a real opportunity to promote sport, movement and recreation to children.
In the early years children should be provided with many informal opportunities to explore and develop their fundamental movement skills these skills enable children to try and participate in many forms of sport and recreation later in life.
Moving in to the primary school years children need encouragement and support from their teachers to keep trying new things. It is important right up until the teenage years that young people continue to participate in a range of different sports and activities. At Harbour Sport we believe that it is extremely important that children receive consistent messages from both school ,home, and the wider community (eg. local sports clubs). As they move in to the teenage years, where traditionally there is a drop off in participation, young people need even more support to stay engaged. This is where as a co-ordinator or teacher it is important to listen to what students want out of their sport and recreation and provide both competitive and non-competitive opportunities to meet these needs.
