Green Prescription

Increasing your physical activity will have a positive impact on your overall health and wellbeing. 30mins of physical activity on most days of the week is recommend for a healthy lifestyle. Taking part in regular physical activity will reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and colon cancer. Other benefits include; increased self esteem, confidence and energy levels.

What is a Green Prescription?
Green Prescriptions (GRx) enable Doctors, Practice Nurses and other Health Professionals to prescribe physical activity to their patients. With it you can improve your health and feel better at the same time.

Making it happen
A Doctor or Practice Nurse writes a Green Prescription, the script is faxed through to Harbour Sport. At Harbour Sport we have a team of enthusiastic Patient Support People (PSP), ready to help you lead a physically active lifestyle. Your PSP will provide you with phone support for 3-4months, they will help you set goals, motivate and encourage you to achieve your goals. The PSP will provide you with information on activity options within your local community.

How active are you?
Take the following quiz to see if you would benefit from a Green Prescription:
1. Are you active for less than 30mins on most days of the week? Yes / No
2. Are you thinking of increasing your physical activity level? Yes / No
3. Would you like support, motivation and encouragement to increase your physical activity level? Yes / No
4. Would you like information on activity options in your community? Yes / No

If you answered YES to 2 or more of the above questions then you WILL benefit from a Green Prescription. Ask your Doctor or Nurse for a Green Prescription today and take a positive step towards increasing your physical activity and enjoying the benefits.

GRx 5 Step

1. The Health Professional (GP / Practice Nurse) write their Patient a GRx, provided the patient’s medical condition is stable.
2. The script is either written or issued electronically. The script is faxed by the referrer to the nearest GRx support programme, and the patient is assigned a Patient Support Person (PSP).
3. The PSP provides their GRx client with support, advice and encouragement to increase their physical activity for 3-4 months. (Click here for support options offered at Harbour Sport).
4. The GRx clients’ progress on their path to an active lifestyle is reported back to the prescribing health professional.
5. If after 3-4 months the GRx client feels they would benefit from ongoing support, they are encouraged to ask their health professional for another GRx.
