Overview![]() OVERVIEW The Harbour region has a rich heritage of high achievement in sport. Before the mid 1980’s our athletes in our region represented either Auckland or North Auckland (now Northland) regions. However as the population grew on the Shore and in the Rodney District more and more sports broke away and formed North Harbour regional bodies and so the Harbour Region as a sporting identity was born. Since that time the Harbour Region has grown from strength to strength and is now leading the way in many sports on national and international stages. Now that the Harbour Region has been established for over 20 years the time is right to celebrate our sporting heritage both pre and post the formation of the Harbour identity through the “Legends of Harbour” Sports Hall of Fame where a number of inductees will be recognised at the Harbour Sport Excellence Awards. Inductees will be selected by an independent group of judges, honored at the Harbour Sport Excellence Awards dinner and their achievements then recognised on an ongoing basis on the Harbour Sport website, media and other promotional opportunities. CRITERIA FOR INDUCTEE SELECTION To be eligible for selection as a Legend of Harbour Sport, nominees must have: - Resided/represented in the Harbour Region - Where a sporting code does not have a Harbour Regional Sporting Organisation the nominee must have represented and been selected from a Harbour club; - Where a nominee competed before the formation of the Harbour Regional Sporting Organisation he/she must have represented and been selected from a Harbour club; - Been retired from Elite Sport for a minimum of 5 years; - Represented their sporting code at ‘senior’ level; and - Contributed positively to and brought credit to their sport in the Harbour Region. This might include: - Their achievements in competition - Their ability to inspire those around them - Their contribution to sport after retirement from competitive competition - Their contribution to sport off the field.
