The 2012 Youthtown Shore to Shore is being held on Sunday, 1st April

Don’t be fooled by the date this event is no April fool’s joke. Last year more than 5,750 people took part in the event, making the Youthtown Shore to Shore the biggest and longest running community event in the Harbour region. This event has been running for the last 28 years in various shapes and it shows no sign of slowing down, in fact, the number of participants grows every year.

In 2011 the Youthtown Shore to Shore netted over $36,000 for North Harbour schools to spend on their sports equipment. Each pupil that enters the Youthtown Shore to Shore 2012 event earns “Sport Equipment Dollars” for their school. Friends and family participating also count toward the prize, so getting involved pays!

This event is open to a wide variety of participants, anyone from parents with kids in strollers to young teenagers who will blitz the run in 20 minutes. Last year, these funds were gratefully received by 51 primary, intermediate and secondary schools from the North Harbour region who took part on the day. This year the Youthtown Shore to Shore is hoping to see even more schools, pupils, parents and teachers involved in 2012.

Teachers play an integral part in the annual Youthtown Shore to Shore event, getting into the spirit of fun in a big way.  Last year teachers took the opportunity to encourage their students to have fun whilst exercising by dressing up in costumes which included everything from pirates to Sponge Bob Square Pants. Some teachers set participation goals for their school. For example when a set number of entries for the school were reached; the teacher ran the event in a costume the students had chosen.

Last year Willow Park Primary School took out the number one spot after participating for eight years. With the funds they received, they were able to purchase steel soccer goals and new junior equipment. They believe the event gets better each year and are keen to hold their position at the top in 2012.

Not only do schools have funding returned to them to purchase physical education equipment, they have a chance to promote health and fitness to their students in an organized event. Running as a school with your mates makes running fun! While some students will cover the 5 km with ease, for others this may be the first time they attempt such a feat. What an incredible way to experience their first substantial run.

There are individual spot prizes to be won on the day as well, including sports gear, Westfield Vouchers, gym memberships and more. This event is sponsored by Auckland City Council, Youthtown, Sports Distributors, Beachside Health and Fitness, Under Armour, School Travel and Classic Hits 97.4FM. They are stepping up to the plate to provide fantastic prizes to be won on the day as well as the sports equipment!

Visit our web site for more information at www.harboursport.co.nz. This awesome 5k race starts at 9 a.m. at Takapuna Grammar and ends at beautiful Milford Reserve. We are hoping to increase our number of participants who enjoy a great day out. This year is going to be great!

Without our sponsors: Youthtown, Auckland Council, Classic Hits 97.4FM, Beachside Health and Fitness, UnderArmour,  Sports Distributors, and School Travel it would not be possible for Harbour Sport to return all the proceeds back to participating schools,” said Chris Milicich. “On behalf of everyone I would like to thank them for their huge contribution.”
