Linking people with a disability to Sport and Active Leisure
Harbour Sport is committed to providing inclusive sport and physical activity opportunities for people with a disability and ensuring that all programmes, events and courses they facilitate are accessible and promoted to people with a disability. Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Programme:
The Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Programme is committed to ensuring people with a disability can participate in inclusive sport and active leisure within their community. The Programme is delivered by Sport Opportunity Advisers who work within the Regional Sports Trusts around New Zealand. The Advisers and Regional Sports Trust staff work together to achieve the Programme's goals. Harbour Sport staff and the Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Adviser can assist in the following areas: Community * Assist people with a disability to join a sport or recreation club * Ensure that people with a disability are involved in community events * Assist event directors and facility providers to run inclusive events and programmes Schools * Work in partnership with schools to enable children with a disability to have the same sporting, physical education and active leisure opportunities as their peers * Provide practical ideas and training for teachers and teacher aides, including ideas for the modification of games and activities to include students of all abilities – see No Exceptions Training for more information. * Assist in the development of IEP targets in sport or physical activity Clubs * Ensure clubs are fully inclusive by providing training for coaches and administrators, assisting with policy development, the provision of adequate resources and appropriate equipment – see No Exceptions Training and SportAccess for more information. Regional Sports Organisations * Assist Regional Sports Organisations to implement a Disability Action Plan – see SportAccess for more information. Funding * Assist young people with a disability, that are 18 years and under, to participate in sport through the Halberg Trust Activity Fund. Applications can be made for equipment, such as modified bikes or boccia balls, or an activity, such as a set of swimming lessons or to cover the cost of a support person for school camps. Halberg Trust will fund those costs over and above what it would cost for a non-disabled child to participate in community sport, recreation and physical activity in an inclusive environment. Inclusion in the Community The major objective of the Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Programme is to provide people with the skills and confidence for inclusion into sport and active leisure with their peers. Integration into inclusive activities is of primary importance in the delivery of the programme. 'Our vision is to enable more people with a disability the opportunity to be more active, more often.' |
