Background 背景资料中文 한국어 In the 2006 census, 17.8% of the North Shore population were classified as Asian, and of those 44% were Chinese and 23.9% were Korean. Increasing sporting opportunities for all ethnic groups across the North Harbour Region is an important goal for Harbour Sport. To facilitate this goal Harbour Sport has begun a project called "ActivAsian". Since the start of the project in 2009, we have initially worked with the rapidly growing Chinese community and are now also doing work in the Korean Community. ActivAsian Project Harbour Sport’s ActivAsian project is an initiative initially targeting the Chinese community. The initiative has three key objectives:
Identifying the needs of the Chinese community The ActivAsian initiative surveyed over 200 Chinese primary school students in 2009 from 4 schools on the North Shore. Consultation with students and parents from these schools and the local North Shore Chinese community is currently underway with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of the Chinese community’s views on sport participation; Chinese children surveyed would like to play more sport.a The sports that they most wanted to play more of were:
A survey of Chinese adults in the North Shore found that 83% of adults would also like to play more sport. Sports that adults were interested in playing more of were table tennis, badminton and swimming. The biggest barrier to sport for adults was a lack of time. Click here for more detailed information of findings from the surveys and focus groups done on primary school aged Chinese students from the four primary schools. Increasing sporting opportunities for the Asian community Harbour Sport is also working closely with sports clubs and schools to increase sporting opportunities for the Chinese community in response to feedback gained about sporting interests. The ActivAsian project is now also aiming to deliver our key objectives to the Korean Community. A Korean Community Sport Coordinator is now employed to assist with communication and connecting sport organisations and the Korean community. Harbour Sport aims to work with regional sporting organisations and clubs on how to improve access to information for the Asian community and how to best support current and new Asian members so that a friendly and inviting environment is created. The ultimate goal is for more Asian adults and students in the North Harbour region to be playing the sports they enjoy. Through making sport an integral part of one’s life at a young age this will hopefully increase the chance of participation later on in life and for future generations. Harbour Sport believes that sport has tremendous potential to act as a tool for social and cultural integration of the people of the Harbour Region.
